A massive gain for BJP in Punjab with former Congress PCC president Sunil Jakhar joining the saffron party leaving behind the two-generations long legacy and bonding with the Congress.
He would surely be the BJP's Lok Sabha candidate in 2024 whether from Gurdaspur or elsewhere is not clear yet. His father Balram Jakhar was MP from Ferozepur and was shifted to Sikar in Rajasthan as the Lok Sabha elections could not take place in Punjab due to the prolonged President Rule.
Sunil Jakhar, coming from a farming family and being a Jat, is going to be a big asset for the BJP, which has been hunting for such a face in Punjab for long.
Sunil Jakhar may help BJP overcome the dismay against it among the farmers, besides it would help BJP cultivate its base among the Jats in Haryana and Rajasthan.
Sunil Jakhar has been upset with the Congress the manner in which he was removed as the PCC president to be replaced by Navjot Sidhu, and later on being denied the chief minister's chair for being a Hindu face.
Though he had announced to quit active politics, it seems he would in his new role bear the BJP's mantle on a larger horizon. to make inroads in the Jat vote bank.
There are indications that some more big names would soon be roped in by the BJP in the region to strengthen its acceptability across various sections of the society.
